hi all
i have an issue with a pc im using at the moment, the pc itself, not the most up to date, but i think there's an issue with it
intermittently (and more often recently) ive noticed hard drive access isn't what it used to be. jumping into the resource viewer (win 7) i can see there are periods where the response time is lagging (12000-15000ms) and in some cases the drive fails POST. ive replaced the SATA cable ffromthe drive to the mobo but ist still happening.
the machine itself is an AMD6000 (3.01GHz dual core) with 8GB of DDR2 RAM (so as can be seen, its no slouch, full x64 processing and performs everything i do with it very well). I took the decision to change the SATA cable as a precaution, so i bought a locking sata cable. (as constant movement in the wiring may disturb something)
before i do something stupid and replace the drive im just kicking it out on the forums, in case there is something else that is wrong (IE mobo, PSU, or even software based (re-image Win7?) as i really don't have the time or patience for a full re-image (more so patience
)
i would say its on its way out, but a replacement and get the files you want to keep copied over before it fails permanently. in the mean time you could burn your files to DVDR's.

I had the experience with a one year old western digital 500gb,dying on me,though I dragged it on for about 7months longer,but during that time I constantly had to reinstall new os,deal with crashes,lost files and regenerate and repair the disc,until I eventually got fed up.
You need to try to hold out, or find a used hard drive, that someone isn't asking an arm and a leg for… The prices of hard drives has tripled since the floods overseas…
