Almost every online dating website also has a online dating guide. Most online dating guides read like a mock up of the other sites and no one is really offering down to earth, realistic, and interesting information. Many guides are outdated as online dating has changed so much in the past few years. Real world online dating advice centers around just three basic principles: be honest; search to be found; and be safe.
Choose a Dating Website
Choosing your online dating website is a little bit like choosing a car. They all come with certain basics but the real difference is in the little details. There are now online dating sites that cater to nearly any dating preference. There are primarily straight sites, there are sites that cater to the gay & lesbian community, and there are even websites for married couples looking to add something to their sex life. Be sure you know which type of website you are joining in order to avoid any misunderstandings.
Compare the type of websites you are interested in with each other to find out the difference in costs and other relevant details. Does the website offer a chat service or would you have to give our own chat information? Does the website offer rules and regulations that protect you from harassment and abusive users? Small details like these can make a world of difference.
Online Dating Profiles
Here are the most important tips to setting up a proper online dating profile. First, avoid using your real name. You want to maintain that element of safety until you choose to let someone in. Posting photos of yourself is usually not required, although you will probably get more views that way. Again, keeping safety in mind, don’t post sexually suggestive or scantily clad photos of yourself. Use some clean photographs that provide small “glimpses” into your life and your personality. Do not include photographs that include other people as everyone has a right to privacy and you don’t want to confuse your potential suitors as to who you are.
One of the most overlooked dating tips is honesty. When you are setting up your profile, don’t embellish. While you want to be interesting you also don’t want to find yourself in the position of coming clean on your first date or second date! But everyone embellishes just a little, don’t they? Once upon a time that was true. But as of late, Internet dating has become more serious and Internet daters are quick to weed out the inauthentic from the genuine. Prevent that first date from being the last!
Search and Be Found
No matter how many online dating tips you’ve read or how many traditional dates you have been on, you may very well find that you are not as comfortable with the idea of contacting other people first. Don’t wait for Mr or Ms Perfect to find you and write ot you. Sure it can happen, but your chances of finding someone in this passive way is incredibly slim. The more you put yourself out there to chat and email other members of the site, the more you will start making connections.
It’s easy to say a quick hello to someone that catches your interest. Short and sweet does the trick, rather then long-winded explanations as to why you are single, how ready you are to jump into a new relationship, and how you’re holding your breath until they respond. Just send them a brief greeting that shows that you’re interested.
Many online dating advice tips include canned messages so that you can send a simple hi. If not, you can send something along the lines of “I saw your profile and just wanted to say hi.”, “I thought it was really interesting that you .” or “Loved your profile and would like to chat. Hope to hear from you.”
Safety
Keeping safety in mind, do not add in your phone number, your address, your personal email address or Facebook information, or any other way to identify or contact you before you are ready. When you are ready to meet someone, do so in a public place and make sure that someone knows where you are going, not just the first time, but every time until you are sure your safety is not threatened. Have fun and good luck!
