If i put a rose on his doorstep
without writing who it is from
what would that do to him
would he be going crazy
and be obsess with finding out who had left it there

Haha do it! He'll be very curious and intrigued. Make sure you wait a little bit before you tell him that it was you, just to let him ponder over it.
