American’s hold a romantic perspective when it comes to the lone wolf. Whether it is a cowboy and his horse, a super hero fighting the forces of evil, or just a good person trying to do their best in tough times, there is a certain part of our psych that just likes to be left alone.
There is, after all, a true beauty that goes with being able to do the things you want to do when you want to do them. Taking a walk, writing poetry, taking a long walk and other solitary pursuits are all seen as ways to build inner character.
And then there are the rest of us.
I’m talking about the billions of people out there who hate being alone. What’s more, many of these people want to make friends with people just like you. In order to open up new channels and meet new friends, you just need to follow a few basic rules.
First and foremost, put yourself out there because friends rarely come knocking on your door.
Joining a club, using the web and free friend finder sites, joining a sports team, and volunteering are all great first steps in your quest to make new friends.
Next on the To Do List is to talk to people. You can sign up for all the clubs, sports teams and online dating sites in the world, but if you have nothing interesting to say it is all pretty much a losing battle. Also, remember, you can talk to anybody anytime. For example, be sure to say “hi” to the clerk at the video store, the person sitting next to you on the bus, or the guy you walk past everyday at the office.
As you talk to people, remember to smile like you mean it and make good eye contact. Finally, keep the talk light and cheery in the beginning, and try not to complain too much.
Once you have started a conversation and things look good, you’ll need to initiate a get-together. If you and the person you are talking to share a common interest, take advantage of that fact and suggest an activity or follow-up meeting. Also, use this opportunity to exchange telephone numbers and email addresses. If you feel any resistance to your ideas, don’t be too pushy, just drop it and move on or wait for a better time.
Once you have found somebody you like, the following are all critical to ensuring the fledgling friendship makes it to the next stage, which is a long-term and lasting relationshipfriendship. In a nutshell, you need to be a good friend in order to make and keep friends. Be reliable. Be a good listener. Be trustworthy. Be there.
Last but not least, cherish those friends that make a positive influence on your life, and do your best to be a positive influence in theirs. This is what true friendship is all about.
