Why Do Most Romance Novels and Romantic Comedies Involve a Man Doing Things That Turn Women off in Real Life?

For example:

Movie: A man sees a beautiful woman, is stunned by her, and it's love at first sight. He searches all over the city for her but can't find her. He does everything he can think of in order to track her down, and finally finds her and they live happily ever after.

Real Life: She gets a restraining order against him and his mug shot is featured on the evening news.

Movie: A man falls hopelessly in love with a woman, only to learn that she's engaged to another man. He fights tirelessly for her, despite her constantly rejecting him. Eventually, she sees the good in him and realizes what a jerk her fiance is, and she and the protagonist live happily ever after.

Real Life: She calls him a loser and tells him to get over it. Another restraining order may possibly be involved here as well.

If these are women's natural reactions to things, then why is an entire body of literature devoted to men behaving in exactly this way? And for that matter, why are women the ones who read/watch this stuff?

Suggestion:

I despise those "quirky goofus steals woman away from her well-adjusted but slightly imperfect fiance" movies. I always feel bad for him, even if he is too wrapped up in his job or not in tune with her feelings or whatever "unforgiveable sin" the poor guy is guilty of. I hate chick flicks in general, but those are the worst.

To answer your question (finally, lol), I think they're so popular because women want a man to pursue them. At least in theory. Kind of like those bodice-ripping covers on cheesy romances. A real woman would put the smack down on any man who tore up her favorite dress, lol. They think it would be nice if a man loved them enough to pursue them relentlessly, but in reality, they would call the cops.
