In 2001 a report in the Journal of the American Medical Association focused on public high school girls – 4,163 of them ranging in age from 14 to 18. They were interviewed in Massachusetts in two separate surveys, one conducted in 1997, the second in 1999.
Even though the study was limited to Massachusetts, its authors believe that the results indicate a nationwide trend. And that would be that one in five adolescent girls has been physically and or sexually abused by a dating partner.
