The Importance Of Communication In A Relationship

What is a relationship without communication? It’s like a house without foundation. Communication is the foundation, the building block upon which we can build a successful and loving relationship. Without it there is no relation and without relation there is no relationship.

Communication involves talking and listening. Many times when relationships go sour, words are exchanged, but communication is not really established. Arguing is not communication. To communicate you actually have to listen to one another.

So many couples break up simply because they’re unable to communicate properly. Communication skills really are important, but this is always a two-way street. Both sides must work on it. Here are some ideas on how to start.

Learn to listen. Listening is crucial for effective communication. When you’re listening without interrupting, you are allowing your partner to tell you about how they feel, what are their values and expectations. You are showing respect and building trust, another extremely important ingredient of a strong relationship.

After you are done listening, it’s your turn to share your feelings. Say what you want and need. Share your goals, thoughts and dreams. Be polite, don’t point fingers, don’t judge. Be honest and sincere, expect but don’t demand.

Avoid arguments and try not to overreact. Compromise is good, it’s not a sign of weakness. Dropping pride and ego requires strength. Try to step back and see the situation in a new light. Learn to forgive, no one is perfect. If you made a mistake, admit it and apologize.

I hope we established that communication is an extremely important part of any relationship. It’s a skill and like any skill, it can be learned and improved – if you are willing to try. Learning how to communicate properly can go a long way toward resolving relationship problems.
