When unintentional discharge of urine happens during nighttime we call it bedwetting. It very common among children but it can also happen to teenagers and adults.
Bedwetting teenagers that suffers from primary enuresis most likely have a close relative, parent of sibling that also had the problem. Expert do no know the exact reasons for bedwetting but we do know that it often seems to be genetic.
Bedwetting is divided into two categories. Primary enuresis (primary nocturnal urinary incontinence) means a child has never gained full bladder control, i.e. it has been wedding the bed ever since a baby.Secondary enuresis is when bedwetting start developing (usually over months or years) after the child has reached full bladder control and this should not be happening.
Bedwetting for young children is usually not a psychological or an emotional problem. Both that does not mean that your child is to lazy to go to the bathroom, it simply has not gained full bladder control. In the case of bedwetting teenagers however, you should investigate the causes.
It is a fact that 2% of 15 year olds we their bed. This is a statistic that bedwetting teenagers should be made aware of as they often feel alone in the world. With younger children the bedwetting is much more common. 7% of 8 year olds wet their bed and a staggering 15% of 5 year olds.
Bedwetting is usually not a signal of a health problem and you should therefore not be worried. But if the bedwetting is accompanied by day time wetting the it can be an indicator of serious illness (if it is more than just a small dribble). Untreated wetting disorder/dysfunctional voiding can result in kidney failure or even death if untreated.
Bedwetting is sometimes a sign of something serious. It can be an indicator of urinary tract infection or diabetes. A qualified pediatrician should always have the chance to examine your child as quickly as possible.
Secondary enuresis is often triggered by emotions and this is especially the case with bedwetting teenagers. Has your family gone through any major changes lately? Divorce, separation, relocation or even a new baby can be these triggers. To much stimulation on the mind caused by excessive school work and pressure from parents can often induce bedwetting for teenagers. If this is the case with you teenager then you need to make sure the teen gets the rest it needs and ensure some freedom from all mental pressure and nervous excitement.
As bedwetting causes a lot of work for parents, cleaning sheets and pajamas it can also cause some frustration. Be careful not to show this to the child is most likely upset with itself and will be even more for causing all this trouble for the parents.
In most cases bedwetting can be cured. Even if you feel that you have tried absolutely everything you should still seek out help. This problem is something that you simply have to deal with and I can assure you that eventually you will say goodbye to bedwetting.
