The true advantage tanning lotion has over other methods of obtaining a tan is it’s aversion to the risks that are involved with the other methods. The reason it is so much safer is because the product does not go past the outer most layer of the skin.
While some people may experience contact dermatitis, which is just an irritation as result of an allergic reaction, there is much less harm to changing the coloration of your dead skin cells than trying to force blood flow to the skin to induce melanin production as with other self-tanning methods.
The most natural and common way to get a tan is by sun bathing. The problem is that it can be time consuming and it’s not as even a tan as more controlled sunless tanning products can offer. Still the minor inconveniences are little problems compared to the serious health risks prolonged sun exposure can cause.
Prolonged exposure to the sun’s ultraviolet rays is the number one cause of skin cancer. It is important that those who expose themselves to high levels of UV rays, such as sun bathers or tanning bed users, be well aware of the early signs of skin problems. Because of the high concentration of UV rays, tanning beds can multiply the risks related to over exposure to UV rays.
Other tanning products include consumables such as the tanning pill. It is a very dangerous product with near fatal side effects. The chemicals in the tanning pills are similar to an additive used in food coloring which is FDA approved. However, the quantities that are in the pills are not FDA approved and not safe according to any health association. Some of the issues include damage to the digestive tract and skin. It can cause hepatitis and a condition in which pockets of yellow form in the eyes as a result of color deposits.
Much the same as tanning lotions, bronzers doesn’t do anything to change the chemistry of the body. In fact, they work just like make up. Bronzers stain the skin a darker tone and come in the form of powders, gels, or moisturizers. They are good for one day use and will come off easily like make up. Just shower, sweat, or rubbing are enough to take off some bronzers.
A company in Australia is developing a new method of tanning by using a synthetic melanacyte-stimulating hormone to imitate the effects of UV rays without the health risks. This innovation would allow users to get a natural tan without UV rays.
Tanning lotion is based on dihydroxyacetone (DHA) that reacts with the dead skin cells. DHA based Sunless tanning has been recommended by the Skin Cancer Organization, American Academy of Dermatology, Canadian Dermatology Association, The American Cancer Society and the American Medical Association.
