Consider This Before Buying Toddler Toys

It is important to learn about safe toddler toys, in order to ensure that your children will be safe playing with them. Certainly all parents want to keep their children safe. But how can we know if a toy is safe?

First of all, we must understand that the recommended age that is listed on the toy’s packaging is important. This is a good guideline to use when deciding to purchase a new toy. This is especially helpful to new parents and people who are purchasing a gift. The age recommendation will help you to avoid purchasing a toy which may be too advanced for a child, or a toy which may be hazardous to a very small child.

Toys with small parts should never be given to a child under the age of three years. Children in this age group frequently put objects into their mouths. This presents a serious choking hazard. Children are very quick, and even though some people believe that they will have time to intervene if this happens, sadly, it is seldom the case. Toddlers should always be given age appropriate toys.

You certainly want a toddler’s toys to inspire creativity, and exploration. You do not however, want them to create frustration. Choosing a safe toy for toddler which is beyond a child’s physical or cognitive ability can quickly become a source of irritation, rather than enjoyment. Remember, children like to play with many simple objects, keep things as undemanding and fun as possible. Allow them to just play, this is the best learning experience.

Painted toys are a bit of a dilemma. Unfortunately, many of these toys are manufactured in countries with standards that do not meet proper safety requirements. There has in fact been an influx of painted toys containing lead paint, distributed in many places. If you decide to purchase a painted toy, you should be sure to take a look at the country where it was manufactured. Find out what the safety standards and requirements are. If you have any doubts, it is probably best not to buy the toy.

With all of the contagious diseases that exist, parents need to exercise caution in keeping their children free from certain germs. It is important to purchase toys which are either machine washable, or may be cleaned with a bleach and water spray (please keep in mind that only a small amount of bleach is necessary). Remember, your children will be putting these toys in their mouths.

“Pull toys” are classic. Everyone remembers these from their own childhood. It is understood today, that these toys can present a danger to small children. Parents and other caregivers should make certain that the strings or pull cords are too short to become wrapped around the neck of a young child. This will certainly avoid the heartache of a child being lost to strangulation.

Becoming informed about safe toddler toys can make a huge difference in the well being of your child. The more that you learn, the safer your precious child will be.
