Temperature Measurement with a Baby Ear Thermometer

Monitoring the temperature of your baby during illness is very important. Firstly it is in itself a symptom of the illness and by monitoring it your can follow it’s progress. In addition however you can ensure that your baby’s body temperature remains within safe limits. This is absolutely critical as any significant deviations from the norm (although very rare) can results in fitting, brain damage and even death.

Traditional methods (normally the rectal route) are still often used. However, many babies dislike this method and resist. Conventional thermometers are also slow to reach a steady temperature and settle on an accurate reading.

The baby ear thermometer represents a great development. Due to costs it was previously only used by health care professionals who needed a very quick and accurate reading. However, now costs have reduced so significantly they are now readily available to all for home use.

Baby ear thermometers work by quantifying levels of invisible radiation called infra-red. All warm objects give off infra-red radiation including our bodies and by measuring the amounts given off using electrical sensors it is possible to calculate the temperature of the source. And, unlike conventional thermometers the measurement and calculation is virtually instantaneous.

In terms of an orifice for measuring temperature the ear is great. Inserting the sensor into the ear doesn’t cause discomfort. The temperature inside the ear also gives a very accurate reading of body temperature in comparison to the rectum for instance which lags behind. Unlike the mouth the reading is not effected by recent consumption of cold or warm food or drinks.

Using a bay ear thermometer is very easy indeed. Although it will vary slightly between models it normally just involves inserting the sensor into the ear and pushing in a button. Some devices give you feedback in terms of whether the device is in the right position and whether an accurate reading has been taken. The final reading is available virtually instantaneously.

Contrary to popular belief baby ear thermometers are not just suitable for use in babies. If you choose the correct device it can in fact also be used for the whole family. Don’t worry – it is perfectly hygienic. Some come with a disposable plastic cap (lens) which fits over the ear piece. Others can be cleaned with an alcohol wipe.

Baby ear thermometers are a great innovation which you can trust. Keeping track of your baby’s temperature during illness is very important to know when to seek help. These products make the process quick and easy. There is also little or no discomfort for your baby.
