Did you know that, during a recession, dolls and other classic toys go through a renaissance in popularity? Classic toys become more valuable because parents know they last longer, and will not fizzle like the latest TV toy fad. Baby dolls are at the center of this phenomenon, even though today’s baby dolls are very different than the classic dolls from years past.
The big change in today’s soft baby dolls is that they are built to look exactly like living, breathing babies. These “realistic” baby dolls are so lifelike that there are several cases of police breaking into parked cars to save the “baby” from suffocation. Soft baby dolls are also popular because they are as cuddily as a real baby. Girls literally can’t go without their baby to take care of; this is a common behavior noted by psychologists and parents. That’s why baby doll sales continue even during hard times, when other superfluous shopping has been curbed.
Medically-accurate, or realistic, baby dolls were designed to help new mothers, but they also sell well in economic down turns. Now I only wonder if the surge of realistic baby doll popularity will bring the price down due to present economic conditions.
